Questions people ask
When are you open?
October to June. The beach goes under the river in the monsoon and the camp comes down with it.
Is there phone signal?
On the highway, yes. On the beach, no — and most people stop minding by the second evening.
Can children raft?
The 16 km run is for ages 14 and up. Under that we do the 9 km from Brahmpuri, which is Grade II; ask when you book.
What about hot water?
Buckets at the bathroom block, heated on the fire, at the hours in the notes above. The Swiss tents have their own bathroom and the same bucket.
Can we bring our own alcohol?
Yes, in moderation, and never on the raft. Nothing is sold at the camp.

Sobre Shivpuri, Rishikesh, Uttarakhand
Shivpuri is the village on the Rishikesh–Badrinath highway where the rafting outfits and the beach camps are, 16 km upstream of Rishikesh. The river here runs between forested ridges with sand beaches on the inside of the bends, and the highway follows it, so every camp is a short walk down from the road. The rafting stretch to Rishikesh takes about three hours; upstream, Kaudiyala is 12 km further and the start of the harder run. Neer waterfall is a walk from Tapovan; Rajaji National Park is a morning from the Chilla gate; and Rishikesh itself — the jhulas, the ghats, the aarti at dusk — is half an hour by taxi and an afternoon well spent between two days on the water.

When to come
October to mid-December and February to June. The water is best for rafting in October–November and again in March–April; December and January are cold on the beach at night and the river is low and clear. May and June are hot by day and busy at weekends. The camp is closed in the monsoon, from the end of June to the end of September, when the beach is under the river.

We ran rafts out of Shivpuri for nine seasons before we put up a tent. The camp is on the beach the rafts launch from — white sand, the river loud in front, sal forest behind — and it is open from October to June, when the water is right. In the monsoon the beach is under the river and we go home. It is a camp, not a resort. Hot water comes in a bucket, the network stops at the road, and dinner is what Nisha cooked that day, eaten at one long table. What you get for that is the Ganga twenty metres from your bed, a raft trip you do not have to drive to, and a fire on the sand with people you did not know at breakfast.
